Cincinnati NIOSH Toastmasters
A safe harbor of peer mentoring, open to everyone,
for developing leadership and communication skills
(Site is under Reconstruction)
We are lucky to meet in well equipped conference rooms. There are slide projectors and overhead projectors as well as lecterns containing computers set up for PowerPoint. Under the glass surface of one lectern is a monitor that allows you to see what is being projected behind you without turning away from your audience. To use PowerPoint, all you have to bring is the disk containing your presentation. Most speeches are made without using those facilities, but when you want them, they are there. Also, if you request it, one of our members will record a video of your speech and download it to you so you can learn by watching yourself.

Meetings are on the east side of Cincinnati during lunch hour every other Tuesday. Click When/Where for directions and times. Since it is lunch hour we have munchies on the table. It is not unusual for someone to eat a bag lunch during the meeting in order to have time to attend.
There are quite a few scientists in the group, so meetings are orderly and end on time, but members are from all walks of life. Members include a statistician, an artist, a chemist, an audiologist, a clerk, an engineer, a public health professional, and others. The group is named for the building in which it first met, but not all the people in the group work at NIOSH.
You work at your own pace in this group. Mentors are available (if you want) and there are manuals, but you can get quite a lot out of the meetings before making that first speech. If you haven't got time to make a speech for a while, just showing up can do a lot for your presentation skills. At each meeting there are opportunities to be the timer or the "ah" counter, and other such functions, that create opportunities to make brief addresses to the group at the end of the meeting. Just that, in this environment of friendly feedback, improves communication skills.
Drop in and let us show you how it works. Visitors are always welcome.
